Valentine’s day is considered as the day of lovers.
Every year, this auspicious day is celebrated globally on February 14th.
But, what is the reason behind the commemoration Valentine’s day on February 14th?
Valentine’s Day, as we know it today, contains vestiges of both Christian and ancient Roman tradition.
Even though there are so many interesting stories behind the global celebration of this auspicious day, the well known one is the story of a sacred clergyman called St. Valentine who is said to have lived in Rome during 3rd century A.D.
At that time, the Rome was under the reign of Emperor Clodious-II.
He believed that a best soldier would be a man without family.
Thus he started exhibiting his cruel nature by banning marriages in the empire.
In the meantime Valentine started encouraging love affairs between youngsters.
When Clodious-II came to know this, he imprisoned St. Valentine and later sentenced him to death.
It is said that during the detention period, Valentine was in love with the daughter of the jailer and used to send love letters to her.
This love letter is considered as the first ever love letter in the world.
Then, Valentine was sentenced to death by Clodius-II on February 14th.A,D. 369.
It is said that, just before his death, he had written one letter to her with an expression “From your Valentine.”
This famous expression is being used even today during the Valentine’s day celebrations.
When years passed, Pope Gracious declared St. Valentine as the sacred clergyman of lovers.
It was after this declaration that the lovers all over the world started celebrating Valentine’s day on 14th February, every year.
It is said that the mortal of Valentine is still remaining at John Doons Scots Roman Catholic Church in Glasgow.
