New Delhi: The government of India has told the Supreme Court that it will not rely on severe anti-piracy laws regarding the trial of two Italian marines who are accused of killing two Indian fishermen in 2012.
The Government attorneys told the apex court that the law which carries the death penalty, would not be applied in the case.
The marines were on military security duty on an Italian cargo ship when they fired and killed the fishermen belong to the Kerala state in India. The marines said that they were mistaken the fishermen as pirates.
After that the issue became highly controversial and created too much bitterness in the bilateral relationships of the two nations. Last week Italy had recalled its ambassador to India to express their protest over the delay in filing charges against the accused.
The marines are on bail pending trial, and are living and working at the Italian Embassy in Delhi
