Iraq: Thousands of Christians in Iraq are said to be fleeing after Islamic militants captured the biggest minority people’s town in the country.
The Islamic State (IS) group is said to have captured Qaraqosh that belongs to the Nineveh province overnight.
This region was under the control of Kurdish forces who recently withdrew from the city.
An international Christian organization said that at least a quarter of Iraq’s Christians were living in Qaraqosh and other surrounding towns.
The IS militant group has seized large parts of Iraq as well as Syria to create an Islamic Jurisdiction.
Kurdish forces, known as the Peshmerga, have been fighting against the Sunni militants’ dominance in the northern region for weeks.
In a separate statement, the United Nations said that it has rescued some of the thousands of people trapped by IS militants in mountains near the town of Sinjar.
