Athens: A strong earthquake having magnitude between 5.7 and 6.1 has affected the western Greek island of Kefalonia before the dawn on Monday, the third February. Last week a similar quake had damaged hundreds of buildings in the island. The current calamity forced the residents to go into the streets once again.
Earthquakes have been troubling the island natives for the past one week. On January 26, 2014 the area had suffered a 5.9 magnitude quake damaging several homes and injuring seven residents. Authorities said that the people who had been hurt, are by the falling objects from top. There are also complaints from the local residents regarding damaged roads, power cut and water supply failure.
According to Kefalonia Mayor Alexandros, the port at the island’s second largest town of Lixouri had been damaged. Deputy Mayor Evangelos Kekatos said that the schools in the island have been closed for the past one week, and not scheduled to reopen until Wednesday. The authorities have asked the natives of the island to remain calm and not approach any buildings that is found damaged.
