Abuja: Israel has joined the international mission to find out the Nigerian schoolgirls kidnapped by Islamic militants in the country.
Nigeria’s President Goodluck Jonathan spoke to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over telephone and accepted an offer for assistance in finding the girls, who were kidnapped by Boko Haram fighters nearly a month ago.
Britain, United States and France have already sent specialist teams and equipment to help Nigeria’s military in the search operations.
French President Francois Hollande, meanwhile, said on a visit to Azerbaijan that a summit on security in west Africa focusing on Boko Haram could be held as early as possible.
The government in Abuja was criticized for the slow pace responds adopted to find out the girls. The Amnesty International claimed that the military had prior information about the impending abduction of school girls.
But the Nigerian military have been forced into action only after the national and international atrocity which included protest marches across the world.
The US, British and French help involves the deployment of military intelligence and surveillance specialists. China has also offered help.
Washington, however, maintained that its assistance did not extend to troops.
Hagel told ABC television that the effort of finding the 223 girls still missing would not be an easy task.
According to Jonathan the girls are still in Nigeria and searches being conducted in the Sambisa forest area of northeastern Borno state, where the military has previously found Boko Haram camps and seized arms.
However, there have been fears, that the girls may have been moved across the border into Chad and Cameroon.
