Abu Dhabi: The International Cricket Council is thinking to implement a new review system for TV umpires which enable them to improve the accuracy on decision making. The ICC also wants them to reduce time taken for reaching such decisions.
The Officiating Replay System (ORS), developed by Hawk-Eye has been analyzed by former elite panel umpire Simon Taufel. Currently he is acting as a shadow umpire on behalf of the ICC in the ongoing Pakistan-Sri Lanka Test match.
During assessment of the new system, Taufel could view the direct images on two giant screens from all 16 cameras kept in the ground without influencing the decision making of TV umpires The TV umpire was with one monitor and one camera angle of the on field action at Sheikh Zayed Stadium.
The intention of ORS is to help TV umpires to provide firm decisions more quickly and precisely. With the support of the new system the umpires require barely two seconds to see whether a bowler has bowled a no-ball and within five seconds they can confirm whether a fielder has stopped the ball cleanly at the boundary line.
The ORS has been trialed twice earlier – One was during the Ashes Test at Old Trafford last year and the other during the last one-day international between Pakistan and Sri Lanka at Abu Dhabi in December.
