Their decades-old resistance to central government rule was aroused as violence in 2004. According to a security adviser to the prime minister, the insurgents targets were a shopping mall, which they set on fire, and electricity pylons.
In the incident one woman was died and more than ten others injured.
The security adviser said that the insurgents are believed to be rebel Muslim groups trying to recruit more people for their cause.
More than 5,700 people have been killed in the south Thailand since January 2004 while more than 40 killed during this year.
There are also various shadowy rebel groups which demand for greater liberty for their long-neglected region.
The opening of peace talks with some of the rebels last year were done nothing to end the violence.
