Meerut: On the day the campaigning came to an end for the last phase of election in India, an unexpected communal riot broke out in Meerut. In this untoward incident, one person was died while over fifty injured.
Police said that the incident was over the setting up of a public drinking facility in the Gudari Bazaar locality of the city.
Members of Hindu and Muslim communities were engaged in a debate over the selection of the place. The words spread fast and in no time people were out on the roads.
The angry mob clashed and pelted stones on each other and even some people opened fire in Peergrasi locality. While one person received bullet injury, four others were injured in the brick-batting.
People also damaged vehicles and looted shops. After the incident, a majority of shops downed their shutters and a curfew-like situation prevailed in the city.
Police spokesman said that five companies of Uttar Pradesh Provincial Armed Constabulary have been deployed to control the situation. Additional forces have been put on alert and local Army units have also been asked to stand by to contain, if any violence breaks out further.
