The one month long Pamban bridge celebrations are coming to a close.
The celebration was inaugurated by Prof. Abdul Kalam, the former president of India who was a long time resident of Rameshwaram.
During the occasion Mr. Kalam was remembering his younger days. He referred Pamban bridge as part of his life. As a young boy, he had traveled so many times over the bridge to take newspapers to the island from the mainland.
The Pambam bridge is India’s first cantilever bridge that connects Rameswaram with mainland. The construction of the bridge was really a challenge of British engineers towards the roaring waves of Indian Ocean.
The bridge was first opened for rail traffic on a February 24th about hundred years back.During the closing celebrations there were photo exhibition which highlight the confidence of Pamban bridge.
