Zagan(Poland): Hundreds of people gathered in Zagan, Poland, to recall memories of the allied prisoners of war who were died during The Great Escape of World War Two.
Seventy years ago, 76 servicemen were fled from the German Stalag Luft III camp through a 336ft (102m) long tunnel. In that attempt only three reached safely while 73 recaptured. Later 50 among them were shot to death.
In the remembrance ceremony veteran servicemen around the world joined family members to lay wreaths at the exit of the “Harry” tunnel which was dug by the prisoners. In the first formal act of the remembrance, each of the serving RAF personnel held a photo of one of the 50 dead in the attempt.
The few former prisoners who survived were respected during the event.
