Washington: Russia has recently launched a naval bombardment on ISIS targets in Syria. The information was released by a senior Russian official from the Middle East.
Four Russian ships are reported to have fired 26 missiles into Syria, hitting 11 targets. Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu has told the news to President Vladimir Putin during a televised meeting.
Shoigu said that the strikes were launched from the Caspian Sea using precise long-range missiles. They had to fly over 1,500 kilometers (930 miles) to reach the desired targets.
In Syria, closer and cooperative military operation between Russia and the embattled Syrian regime of President Bashar al – Assad is in full swing.
Russia and Syria launched coordinated attacks on Islamist factions in towns in Hama and Idlib provinces in western Syria.
According to an opposition group source, the Syrian shelling was seemingly planned with the Russian air-strikes.
As per the fresh news and evidences, the primary goal of Russia is to reinforce al-Assad rather than to neutralize terrorism.
Even while ships and warplanes conducted fresh strikes, Russia had said that they were willing to cooperate with the United States in carrying out attacks in Syria.
Meanwhile, speaking to reporters in Rome, U.S. Defense Secretary Ashton Carter called the Russian campaign of air-strikes in Syria as a fundamental mistake.
He said that the United States would not cooperate with the ongoing Russian operations in Syria.
