Washington: US Senate Republicans have blocked a Democratic supported minimum wage rise bill, as the two parties are in a set out to create some images ahead of November’s election.
The bill brought to raise the national minimum wage from $7.25 to $10.10 (£5.99) was failed in a largely party-line vote of 54-42.
According to the Republicans, the wage rise at this juncture would be unaffordable for employers while Democrats claimed that the actions of Republicans are against poor workers. In recent months several states in the US have passed their own minimum wage rises.
The bill presented in the senate was failed to attain the required 60 votes to proceed for the final stage.
Tennessee Senator Bob Corker was the only Republican to vote in favor of the bill, while Democratic Majority Leader Harry Reid exercised his franchise for “no” and so it was clear that the bill would fail.
