Melbourne: Switzerland’s Stanislas Wawrinka grabbed his first Grand Slam title in a remarkable style when he defeated injury-troubled World No. 1 Rafael Nadal in the Australian Open final.
The game was a splendid reminder of a stunning Australian Open which enabled Wawrinka to become the first man to win a Grand Slam by beating world No1 and No2 players. He had won over Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals before defeating the World class Rafael Nadal who was disturbed by a back injury in the final. Wawrinka had defeated Federer, who was overcome by Nadal in the semi-finals.
Nadal, who was beyond his 14th major title, looked as if he might pull out of the game because of the back injury. But the firm determination and presence of mind enabled him to fight back to take the third set and force the match into a fourth. The scoreboard of the final match which held at the Rod Laver Arena was 6-3, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3. Their encounter was lasted for two hours and twenty one minutes.
It was really an unbelievable win for Wawrinka, who had never won over Nadal in their 12 previous meetings. Thus he could win the first Slam title only at his 36th attempt which is the second longest wait on record.
Wawrinka was very sensational over his victory and revealed that it was his ever best Grand Slam since he was enjoying the tournament as a whole.
