New Delhi: The Supreme Court has asked the government to find a genuine solution to the issues related to the Italian marines who are accused of killing two Indian fishermen.
The Attorney General of India G.E. Vahanvati told the court that the government has been attempting to find a permanent solution to the problem. He was also referring about some witnesses who were agreed to appear in court and did not.
Earlier, senior counsel Mukul Rohtagi told the court that one year has passed since the apex court transferred the Italian marines matter to the centre. Even though the crime was committed from the coastal area of Kerala, the state has no provision in jurisdiction to try the marines. Regarding this, the apex court revealed that the authority to hold the trial of the two foreign marines is only with the Union Government of India. However, no charge-sheet regarding the matter has filed till this time.
Rohtagi pointed out to the court that the two Italian marines, Chief Master Sergeant Massimilano Latorre and Sergeant Salvatore Girone, have been in India for nearly two years on account of the trials.
The court said that the central government in consultation with the Chief Justice of India, would set up a special court to hold the trial.
