Beijing: A Chinese female doctor was accused for selling seven babies to human traffickers. The punishment given to her for the illegal act was suspended death sentence. There was massive public protest against the growing threat of child trafficking.
Dr. Zhang Shuxia was working as an obstetrician at Fuping County Maternal and Child Health Care Hospital in northwestern Shaanxi Province. As per the reports she had sold seven babies to human traffickers.
According to the court, the 55-year-old Doctor was used to persuade the parents of the babies to give up their sick newborns.
The parents of the infants were believed by the doctor that their babies were having serious and incurable diseases and asked them to give up the babies.
Zhang has been sentenced to death, with a two-year official pardon. Suspended death sentences are usually substituted by life imprisonment in China.
