London: A medical tribunal in Britain has accused an Indian-origin doctor for intentionally injuring the genital organ of a woman while performing surgery. This has been considered as a severe criminal offense in the UK.
The Manchester tribunal said that Dr Sureshkumar Pandya, a general practitioner, who has performed surgery to reduce the size of the 33-year-old woman’s labia, left her genital organ injured.
According to the Evening Standard, the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service has found the anatomical result of the procedure as equivalent to FGM, but accused Pandya of intentionally causing it.
The World Health Organization defines it as partial or total removal of the external female genitalia while other injury to the female genital organs are considered under non-medical reasons. Even though such practices are unlawful in most of the countries, the laws surrounding it are poorly enforced.
