Banasura Sagar Dam

This is said to be the largest earth dam in India and located about 21 km north-west of Kalpetta. The dam is constructed over Banasura Lake with huge masses of stones and rocks. The crystal clear water in the dam as well as Banasura hill valley makes this area highly mesmerizing. The background formed by hills really enhances the panoramic appearance of the surroundings. The group of Island like regions seen in the reservoir is the partly submerged nearby lands. This natural Island formation has made this location highly spectacular. The main amusement here is boating through the entire reservoir region. The scenic mountains make a gesture for adventure to tourists and the dam site as a whole is an ideal place for trekking. Banasura Mountain is the third largest peak among the western Ghat hills. A visit to the dark forest in the Banasura hills will be a memorable one to the tourists. Karalad Lake, the another tourist hotspot in Wayanad is very close to this earth dam.
