Handrapur: In a strenuous rescue operation, forest officials and wildlife activists have captured a full grown leopard that intruded into Ballarpur town, about 160 km from Nagpur. It is reported that the leopard has injured three people, including honorary wildlife warden Bandu Dhotre, as it jumped over the roof and sprinted through narrow lanes of the densely populated Santoshi Mata ward.
Wildlife warden Dhotre, who was in charge of the rescue operation, claimed that the leopard may have strayed into the town while following the returning cattle near the Karwa forest adjacent to Ballarpur town. The beast had injured one person during the early hours in the lane. It then jumped over the high compound wall to intrude into the cattle-shed and took shelter into the fodder compartment of the shed.
On the basis of information, the forest officials and rapid response unit (RRU) of forest department were rushed to the scene. Dhotre and Wildlife Protection Force, a rescue wing of NGO Eco-Pro, too reached at the spot. Thousands of people gathered at the lanes, especially at the roofs in the area. Two riot control units of police were deployed at the venue to control the overwhelming mob.
