New Delhi: In the ongoing Parliament election in India, about 6.61 crore people still left to vote for the 41 parliamentary constituencies and the corresponding polling will be taking place on 12th May. This time the Indian voters look set to beat the highest ever turnout of 64.01 per cent that occurred in the eighth Lok Sabha election of 1984-85 which came after the assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. In that Lok Sabha election, as many as 25.62 crore voters out of a total 40.03 crore were excised their franchise.
The 502 seats that have gone to polls so far, the effected voter turnout is 66.27 per cent. From the remaining 6.61 crore of the 83.05-crore-strong electorate, a turnout just exceeding 2.5 0 crore, or around 38 per cent, will take the overall turnout past the 1984-85 record.
The Election Commission’s Director General Akshay Rout told The Indian Express that the strength of voters who casted their votes already has become two percentage points higher than the highest ever turnout seen in the country. He is expected to end up the smashing off that record by May 12th.
