Bangalore: The Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) has launched country’s first electric bus to meet its highly increasing transport requirements. The bus runs with the support of electricity available from chargeable batteries.
The vehicle is a fully air-conditioned ‘e-bus’ having a length of 12 meter. It can accommodate 32 passengers, including the driver and a wheelchair occupant. It can travel a distance of 250 km on a single charge while the duration for the battery charging is four to six hours. For the first three months the electric bus will be running in the city on a trial basis and if find successful, the services will be expanded further.
For the safety of passengers, the bus is provided with two rooftop escape hatches whereas all window panes are made of breakable glasses. BMTC has already shortlisted eight Volvo bus drivers who are already well trained.
