Rangoon: Census-takers are now found moving across Myanmar – This is as per the Government’s decision to gather data for a rare count of the population. The census has already been criticized since it may develop religious and ethnic tensions.
The count was questioned when the government asked the Muslims to register as “Bengali” rather than “Rohingya,” a stateless group of the United Nations who are considered as the world’s most persecuted minorities.
Ethnic minorities fear that the detailed questions in the census may be used for political purposes.
Hence some groups have said that they will block census-takers from entering their teritorries, while others threatened to boycott the survey.
The census is scheduled to end on April 10.
