Colombo: Sri Lanka’s Northern Provincial Council (NPC) has passed a declaration demanding an international investigation into the war crimes allegedly committed during the country’s ethnic violence.
The resolution was proposed by NPC member M.K. Shivajilingam of the Tamil National Alliance (TNA), which formed the NPC administration after winning the 2013 provincial elections. Out of the 38-member Provincial Council, 30 are from TNA.
The resolution was put-forth just two months before the United Nations Human Rights Commissioner Navi Pillay is about to submit a written report on alleged massacre to the Human Rights Council in Geneva.
The Northern Council has demanded an international inquiry into the Sri Lankan government’s acts during the ‘ethnic cleansing’ act. The provincial council has also passed a resolution regarding the rejection of inquiry conducted by the Sri Lankan Government over the matter.
Prior to the resolution there were several rounds of debate on whether the term “genocide” should be used for the massacre of Tamil civilians during the violence.
Chief Minister C.V. Wigneswaran of the NPC who has a respectable image within the TNA, insisted the members to avoid the term.
In another resolution, they have decided to build a monument at Mullivaikkal, in Mullaitivu to pay homage to the civilians killed in the final military attack on the LTTE in May 2009.
But the Sri Lankan government has not given ears to these resolutions.
