Washington: President Barack Obama has welcomed Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama to the White House despite China’s strong protest. China threatened that the meeting would hurt the bilateral relationship between the two nations.
Obama has spoken to Dalai Lama for nearly an hour and appreciated him for his commitment to peace and nonviolence.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said in a statement that by arranging a meeting between the president Obama and Dalai Lama, the U.S. was purposefully interfering in the internal affairs of China by violating the norms regarding the international relationship between the two nations. China has also blamed Dalai Lama for motivating Tibetans with thoughts of independence.
Even though China claims Tibet as their historic territory, it has been globally accused of committing severe human rights violations in the region. Dalai Lama, who has absconded to India in 1959, denied all those allegation and revealed that he only wants to protect the traditional Buddhist culture in Tibet.
