New Delhi: Master blaster Sachin Tendulkar and renowned scientist Professor CNR Rao were awarded Bharat Ratna by President Pranab Mukherjee in the capital city New Delhi on Tuesday.
Bharat Ratna is the highest civilian award of the country and Tendulkar has become the first sportsman who has been received this honor. Moreover, Tendulkar is the youngest individual alive to be received the Bharat Ratna. He was arrived to receive the award with his wife Anjali Tendulkar.
The prestigious occassion was attended by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, his wife Gursharan Kaur, Congress president Sonia Gandhi, Vice President Hamid Ansari, Defence Minister A K Antony and other UPA ministers.
Following the arrival of President Pranab Mukherjee, the event began with the national anthem. Then, the President conferred the honour on Tendukar and Rao.
