New Delhi: Sheila Dikshit, the former Chief Minister of Delhi, has been appointed as the new Governor of Kerala.
The offer from the central government came within three months of her defeat in the recent Assembly polls.
The decision has been conveyed to 75-year-old Dikshit and she will be succeeding Nikhil Kumar, the current Governor of Kerala. Dikshit was the Chief Minister of Delhi from 1998 to 2013.
During the Delhi Assembly elections in December last, Dikshit was defeated severely by the Aam Aadmi Party(AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal. Kejriwal became the Chief Minister of Delhi after Dikshit and resigned later over the Jan Lokpal issue.
In the last Delhi Assembly poll, the performance of the Congress party was very poor by bagging only eight seats in a House of 70.
Sheila Dekshit had also represented Kannauj Parliamentary Constituency of Uttar Pradesh between 1984 and 1989.
Nikhil Kumar, the current governor of Kerala is resigning to contest the upcoming Parliament elections from the Aurangabad seat in Bihar, which he had won in 2004.
