Gazza: A lot of animals in the Gazza zoo are reported to have died of starvation.
Dozens of animals have wasted away from thirst and hunger at Khan Younis zoo in the poverty-stricken Gaza Strip. Zoo owner Mohammed Awaida claimed that his staff couldn’t get in to the zoo because of the Palestinian and Israeli conflict. Animals comprising of monkeys, lions, tigers, porcupines and crocodiles were all left to die and decay in their enclosures at the animal park
The ‘South Forest Park’ which started by Mr Awaida in 2007 had lost a number of animals following the Israel’s military offensive against Hamas that began in December 2008. Mr. Awaida said that either he or his staff were unable to reach the zoo and many animals were died of total neglect and starvation.
And now that history has repeated once again following the fighting between Israel and Palestinian militants which intensified last summer killing more than 1,960 Palestinians and 67 people on the Israeli side.
Once again the zoo keepers were unable to reach the zoo and animals died of neglect and starvation. They include a little monkey, which died in its enclosure. In another enclosure, a Palestinian zoo worker could traced out the remnants of a crocodile.
Khan Younis is one of the five zoos in the Gaza Strip. The region being ruled by Islamic Hamas Militants, has a population of 1.7million people.
