China shuts down its porn websites

Beijing: China has closed over 100 websites which displayed pornography and also thousands of accounts on social media sites in an effort to clean up their Internet. The campaign having name “Cleaning the Web 2014”, was launched in response to the vast publicity of on-line pornography despite the repeated bans from their side. The new prohibition is brought in to force through a circular issued by the National Office Against Pornographic and Illegal Publications. According to the official Xinhua news agency, the authorities have closed 110 porn websites and more than 3,300 accounts on China-based social networking services, and deleted more than 200,000 items containing pornography since January. It has been observed that diffusing on-line pornographic information severely harms the physical and mental health of teens, and seriously corrupts social ethics. The current campaign will be continued until November this year.
