Germany: Germans celebrated the Rose Monday on 3rd March 2014 with gaiety and enthusiasm.
Rose Monday is also referred as Rosenmontag by the Germans. It is the highlight of the German Carnival (Karneval). Rosenmontag is celebrated in German-speaking countries, including Germany, East Belgium, Austria, and Switzerland. It is heavily celebrated in”Hochburgen” areas which is considered as the strongholds of carnival celebrations.
During Rose Monday celebrations people usually dress up in fancy costumes and perform dancing, parades, heavy drinking while general public displays with floats. Usually sweets (“Kamelle”) are thrown into the crowds who line-up the streets by the cries “Helau” or “Alaaf”, whereas the cry “Kölle Alaaf” is only applicable to the Cologne area, meaning “Cologne over all”.
Rose Monday is not a national holiday in Germany, but schools are remain closed during these celebrations.
