United States: A psychology professor whose artwork was commissioned by US Pop Star, Lady Gaga has been released a dizzying array of optical illusions. Professor Akiyoshi Kitaoka, of Ritsumeikan University, Japan, were spent more than a decade creating the stomach-churning designs, which can be viewed on screen as magical twists and turns.
The 52-year-old Professor said that he experienced interest in optical illusions when he had a chance to work at a neuroscience institute twelve years ago. His works were evolved from an interest to study the brain’s interpretation of signals from the eyes. Some of his works are based on trial and error methods, whereas others are logical progressions of previous designs.
Professor Kitaoka became internationally fame after US Pop singer Lady Gaga chose one of his designs for the cover of her latest album called Artpop. He had also devised the Rotating Snake illusion in 2003, which appeared with a warning on his website that it could cause the feeling of nausea to some viewers. According to Professor Kitaoka, the Rotating Snakes design seemed to be the favorite among most of the people.
Having originally studied animal psychology, Professor Kitaoka decided to focus on optical illusions after analyzing their effects on monkeys. Each design is created either through a process of trial and error or based on illusion experiments of the past. It was during mid 90s that he started designing the images and has since created hundreds of different designs.
Optical illusions became popular during the op art movement of the 1960s.
