London: Nasa has conducted experiments with flying saucer as a first step to put man on Mars in future.
But in this experiment, unfortunately, the device hurtled down and crashed into the Pacific Ocean.
This was due to the failure of the parachute that deployed.
According to Nasa the Low-Density Supersonic Decelerator’s (LDSD) maiden flight was successful even though the designed gigantic parachute to slow its fall got tangled.
Nasa officials have declared it as a good test over the technology and expected to use it one day to deliver heavy spacecraft as well as astronauts on Mars.
Viewers watching the experiment on the Internet saw the LDSD rising from the Hawaiian island of Kauai by balloon to 36,500m before rocketing even higher.
As it prepared to drop back to the Earth, a tube around it expanded to slow its speed which was four times the speed of sound.
About three hours later, the parachute happened to be in an unfurled condition.
Engineers have planned several more test flights next year.
