California: While there are propaganda regarding the global eradication of Polio, an illness similar to the disease has been found out in California
Doctors are trying to collect more information about the polio-like syndrome which causes paralysis in children. Doctors found out this illness among some children in California.
Neurologists who have diagnosed children suffering from illness during the time frame of August 2012 and July 2013 found out paralytic attack in one or more of their limbs. After thorough examinations and studies they came to the conclusion that the illness is more or less similar to Polio. All five children had been taken the preventive vaccine against the polio virus. The ongoing treatment did not seem to help the children to regain their motor function.
Samples tested from two of the children were positive for enterovirus 68, a rare virus that has been linked to severe respiratory illness in the past. Samples from the rest of the children were not collected or tested soon enough to yield conclusive results, said the neurologist at the University of California, San Francisco.
The polio virus has been believed as eradicated from the United States for more than 30 years. According to the World Health Organization Afghanistan, Pakistan and Nigeria are the only three countries in the world which are not get freed from the disease.
