Ashbourne: Residents of Ashbourne in Derbyshire have taken part in the traditional annual Shrovetide football game. This exciting game with a football is said to be the world’s oldest, largest, longest and maddest game of footy.
The game is played between the Up’ards and the Down’ards, those residing north and south of the River Henmore which divides the town. The game has little to do with globally famous normal football.
The annual Royal Shorvetide Football match is held recently at Shrove and Ash in the town of Ashbourne. This game has been played in these locations since at least the 12th Century. Unlike normal football game this unique game can be played by following only six rules. Players are not allowed to commit either murder or manslaughter and the ball cannot be carried in a motorized vehicle or be hidden in a bag.
