Sabarimala is a popular Hindu pilgrim center belongs to the Pathanamthitta district of Kerala state in India. Hindu God Swami Ayyappan is said to be in meditation in this temple after fulfilling the intentions of his incarnation. The years old temple is in the midst of evergreen dense forest of Western Ghat’s misty mountain ranges. The temple and surrounding environments render an enchanting appearance to the visitors who come as devotees. This is one of the few Hindu temples in India which is opened to all sorts of people irrespective of their cast, creed and religion. This Hindu religious center always upholds its years old tradition to maintain equality as well as fraternity within the temple premises. According to this temple culture all devotees are eaqual in-front of Lord Ayyappa and believes in the oneness of human soul. It is said that the temple in the dense forest was being constructed in accordance with the instructions from the Lord himself.
More than 50 million people are said to have been visiting this temple yearly. But unlike other Hindu temples in India, the devotees of Sabarimala have to perform certain austerities involved divine penance for a period of 41 days before approaching the Lord for his eternal blessings. This is essential for all followers to get prepared for the forthcoming tedious journey to Sabarimala. For this, they must makeup their mind first and get ready physically for the 41 day holy penance. It is desirable to start such holy formalities three days prior to the wearing of sacred garland and black dhoti. For this holy event, they have to find out a master-devotee who has been to Sabarimala repeatedly for at least 18 times. This ritual procedure can be conducted either from any nearby temple or any holy place. There are also devotees who receive the holy garland from temple priests .
The 41days austerity highlights the divine intentions of Sabarimala pilgrimage. Devotees must keep an image of god in their mind and think about only positive things. This will help them to keep their mind, thought and deed absolutely clean and pure which they have to surrender to the deity. They need to rely on normal vegetarian food during the days of penance. The devotees will be bound by several regulations and dictated themselves if they have to mount the sacred 18 steps which lead to the temple premises.
