Lakshman was the younger brother of Lord Sri Rama. This is said to be the place where Lakshman relaxed for some time along with his brother Lord Rama. This divine place is very close to the Sri Ramanathaswamy temple in Rameswaram. The spectacular temple of Lakshman represents a lot of instances of Ramayana with carved images on walls. The small compact temple is constructed in typical Dravidian style, with pillars having carved statues over it. There are statues of Ram-Lakshman and Sita inside the sanctum sanctorum.
There is a divine pond called Lakshman Thirtha by the side of this temple. The small Mandapam inside the pond is surrounded by water from all the sides. From the Mandapam, there are steps to reach the sacred water source. It is believed that Lord Lakshman had installed a Shiva Linga and worshiped Lord Shiva for keeping away his sins. Before performing rituals for God Siva he would have taken bath in this pond. The temple enables devotees to offer sacred prayers to Lord Lakshman and signifies the vital role he had played in favor of his brother Lord Rama.
Many statues of Lord Lakshman sculptured in marble and huge carved idols of Lord Rama and his consort Goddess Sita have been consecrated inside the temple. This highlights the unity they had maintained throughout in their life and points out that they were never able to live apart. Moreover, it also highlights the traits of truthfulness and devotion performed by Lord Lakshman towards his family, his brother Lord Ram and his sister in law Goddess Sita.
